What a DUI really costs

The bill is only the start. Add years of higher car insurance, then what that money would have grown to if it had been saved instead.

Where the numbers come from

All-in estimates for a first DUI commonly run from about $10,000 to $25,000: fines and court fees, a lawyer, towing and impound, alcohol education classes, license reinstatement and an ignition interlock device. Car insurance often rises by about $1,000 to $2,500 a year and stays higher for three to five years. Costs vary a lot by state; type your own.

What it doesn't count

Lost work from a suspended license, a lost job, injuries, damage to others, or the effect of a record on future pay. Any of these can cost far more than the numbers here.
